ZLOG Interview: Steven Jensen

Steven Jensen just appeared on the scene and has quickly stirred things up. His last video Untitled blew the minds of the fixed gear freestyle community. Not much is known about this overnight sensation so I asked him a few questions. Enjoy

ZLOGBLOG: Where are you from?
STEVEN JENSEN: I’m from midevil england, iowa… actually redmond, wa

ZB: How long have you been riding bikes? How long on a fixed gear?

SJ: I started riding bmx around 11 years old. and i started riding fixed just this last summer so about six months

ZB: what got you into riding fixed freestyle?
SJ: I wanted a road bike just to be able to ride around town when my car broke down. and after building up a single speed with drop bars and brakes i decided there was too much stuff on the bike…i wanted a cleaner looking bike that was more simple (i rode bmx with out brakes or a chain and pushed around like a skate boarder. i like the simple look to it) i wanted a cleaner looking road bike so i took off the brakes and made it fixed in the back so i could stop.. then was tryin wheelies and 180s and thats when i put on flat bars and i guess thats how it started. its been soo much fun

ZB: what is your current bike setup?
SJ: my current bike set up a milauwakee bruiser frame and fork. the rims i have i think are made of glued together pop cans or some thing equal in strength and are as straight as my friend tyler godwin after a night of heavy drinking haha..not too sure about the hubs either.. 43/16 gear ratio with old creaky bmx cranks and bottom bracket the cranks are 180mm haha.. i ride flat bars cut pretty narrow.. my chain is a whipperman 1/8 chain that i swear is bomb proof and weighs 6 pounds haha. ( i took my chain off my bmx because i broke it so much and destroyed my knees from that.. so i figured if i was ever going to trust a chain again on a bike i might as well buy the stongest one i could.) i have animal bmx grips and pedals with hold fast straps and i really only use one of the straps when i ride.. i dont see how you guys can have so much confidence trying tricks with both feet strapped in. haha

ZB: what gets you motivated to ride?
SJ: Looking at my bike gets me wanting to ride.. every time i walk past it in my house i pick it up and hold the bars and sit on it and stuff haha.. uhm old bmx videos and  watching new videos of people doing new tricks and going fast.. i never rode fast on a bmx and thats new to me haha. when my bike is tuned up really nicely and clean looking.

ZB: what riders do you like to watch (bmx, fixed or other)
SJ: my favorite bmx riders are people who ride street and get super tech.. people who can ride some dirty street spots and make it look good and smooth as if it were designed to be riden like that on a bike. but i would have to say nigel sylvester, ratboy, and the kids i ride bmx with. for fixed i guess i dont really know the bigger name riders.. but i guess anyone doing clean tricks and making it look easy.

ZB: when are you going to come ride with the zlog crew?
SJ: and i would love to come ride real soon.. as soon as i can find a ride out to seattle on a nice day and when my bike is rolling too haha.. i wanna start riding with and meeting new people,  learning more about these bikes and what parts to get. you can call me whenever you plan on heading out to ride and i will try my hardest too

ZB: Any last words?
SJ: thanks for putting up the video it seems like lots of people are enjoying it =]
